ELIZABETH
BURNS 2nd Place Grand Prize Winner
A
trip to India while at university in London, England sparked an interest in travel
and photography. Elizabeth pursued a BFA at The College of Santa Fe studying with
David Scheinbaum and interning with Beaumont Newhall, the first Curator of Photography
at MOMA, and with photographer Patrick Nagatani. A crisis of artistic confidence
turned her to teaching and she spent three years in Japan and South America as
an English teacher. Returning to the U.S. and settling in Taos, New Mexico, she
owned a boutique for nine years all the while taking photographs, rebuilding her
confidence and improving her skills.
Elizabeth’s love of travel has
never dissipated and it has taken her (mostly solo) to Cuba, Tibet, Inner Mongolia,
Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Ethiopia, Bhutan, Laos, Peru, and Bolivia.
Elizabeth
doesn’t like to talk about her influences and artistic vision beyond saying
that she is fascinated with the geometry of natural objects, and that her interest
in and respect for the subjects of her portraits help put them at ease. She prefers
the work to speak for itself. A website of her work is currently under construction.
